Targeting Anti-Social Behaviour

Whether we apply our services as a consultant or a security contractor a large part of what we do is to combat the effects of anti-social behaviour. Many people aren’t quite sure what the term anti-social behaviour means and are unsure how to tackle it. Because of this, we thought it would help if this section covered what ASB is, how to tackle it and how to make sure it doesn’t return.

Anti-social behaviour covers a wide range of selfish and unacceptable activity that can blight the quality of community life. Terms such as ‘nuisance’, ‘disorder’ and ‘harassment’ are also used to describe some of this behaviour.

Examples include:

  • Nuisance neighbours
  • Yobbish behaviour and intimidating groups taking over public spaces
  • Vandalism, graffiti and fly-posting
  • People dealing and buying drugs on the street
  • People dumping rubbish and abandoned cars
  • Begging and anti-social drinking
  • The misuse of fireworks
  • Reckless driving of mini-motorbikes.

A legal definition of anti-social behaviour is found in the Crime and Disorder Act 1998. The Act describes anti-social behaviour as 'acting in an anti-social manner as a manner that caused or was likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same household' as the perpetrator.

It doesn’t just make life unpleasant; it prevents the renewal of disadvantaged areas and creates an environment where more serious crime can take hold.

Anti-social behaviour is a major issue in some of the UK’s more deprived or disadvantaged communities.

Anti-social behaviour is also very expensive. It is estimated to cost the British taxpayer £3.4bn a year.

When talking to the average person in the street, the feeling is that ASB has become something of an epidemic with every other person experiencing some form of ASB regularly either at home or work.

The Home Office recognised this trend along time ago and is keen to stamp out ASB and tackling its causes. Dedicated departments have been created to give advice on confronting ASB. Agencies have engaged with organisations such as Councils, Housing Associations and schools as these are some of the worst hit victims.

However, there is a limit on how much time the authorities can give an individual or organisation. Without a closely monitored, comprehensive, start-to-finish approach to this problem it may be only a matter of time before the problem returns or simply gets worse.

As suggested, there are many proven and well documented methods of dealing with ASB and owing to the wealth of knowledge the police have on ASB the team at Oracle Vision tracked down the preferred police trainer and through much begging and pleading got them to train us up too, result!

Now this is where we come in, we recognised some time ago that the methods the ASB teams offer are proven to be effective however most organisations need much more than just advice to cure their problems completely. Through talking with our customers within Councils, Colleges and Housing Associations we have partnered with many of them and created individually tailored strategies that tackle their present problems, make provisions for future trouble and put in place methods of monitoring our progress to make sure our efforts stay effective.

Our customers tell us that our approach is effective because it’s different. Our methodology is applied over multiple levels which reach much further than the immediate and most obvious occurrence of ASB. While at the same time we have the knowledge to enhance our tactics with clever technology.

The team at Oracle Vision HQ are in a pretty unique position as we are able to help you from every angle. With our roots in electronic engineering and the understanding of all the latest methods of crime prevention, we are capable of creating combinations of crime prevention principles together with security gadgets to apply to the worst areas affected by ASB and crime. We don’t have any magic wands but we do know how to engineer an environment that will organically reduce and remove the undesirable elements.

We are very clear with our aim; a successful campaign against ASB will protect the community while at the same time make the perpetrators change their behaviour.
